The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade is the complete title of the play by Peter Weiss. The play is set in 1808, 15 years after Jean-Paul Marat, one of the most radical leaders of the French Revolution, was murdered by a young nun named Charlotte Corday. It features an audience within the play, who witnesses the Marquis de Sade, an inmate at the asylum, directing scenes from the assassination.

Marat"Marat/Sade is meant to leap over the gap between performers and audience, to force viewers to react, think, move and even change...[it] can seem like a talky play, with all the swirling speecehes about politics, religion, war and revolution...The messages couldn't be more timely, however, in a new era of war and unrest. And director F. Reed Brown provides vivid, scary images that make the material come alive on stage." –Julie Kistler, The Pantagraph, reviewing the performance at Illinois State University
